| British Ships bringing Prussian soldiers. |
Great Grandpa Lewis Skillings was born near Berlin, Germany in 1750. As a teenager he ran away from home, pushed out by his stepmother. He made his way to England, just as a boat of Germans was headed toward America. He decided to join them. Somewhere along the way he and a friend learned that they were going there to fight on behalf of King George... impressed into service to fight against the American Colonists. In 1904, one of his great grand daughters wrote a poem describing what happened... Enjoy!
After he jumped ship, and dodged the bullets, he and his friend went ashore and hid from the search party that went ashore to kill them. His future father-in-law, Charles Blagdon, hid them until it was safe. Lewis aided the cause of his new countrymen and settled down in Maine after the war. His son, and namesake, Lewis Skillings jr, started our family's journey west to Ohio. Lewis jr's Grand daughter, Laura McKinney Byrd, made her way to Lovell, Wyoming, and then to Montana, which, of course is where dear Grandma Shirley met Grandpa Alvin. The rest, as they say, is history.
